On May 22, 2019, at approximately 4:21 p.m., State Police responded to a report of a wrong way driver resulting in a head on collision on the Grand Island Bridge, between a Chevrolet Silverado and a Honda Accord.
Investigation revealed the Chevy was traveling southbound in the northbound lane on I-190, in the town of Grand Island when it struck the Honda head on. The driver of the Chevy, Andrew Chapman, 37, of Niagara Falls, NY, was found to be intoxicated. He was transported and processed at SP Buffalo, where his blood alcohol content was determined to be 0.19%. He was charged with Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated and Reckless Driving; both Unclassified Misdemeanors, as well as multiple Vehicle and Traffic Violations.
Chapman was turned over to a sober third party and released on appearance tickets returnable to the Town of Grand Island Court on June 19, 2019 at 5:30 p.m.
The driver of the Honda sustained minor injuries. Both drivers declined medical treatment.
