USCG Sector Buffalo Commander to Honor Six Lost at Oswego Lighthouse
Sector Buffalo, along with Station Oswego, held a memorial ceremony to honor the 75th Anniversary of significant loss of life in Oswego, New York. During a routine change of watch at the West Pierhead Lighthouse in 1942, a simple relief mission quickly turned into a rescue mission. A failed engine, combined with treacherous weather and inability to anchor, resulted in the picket boat conducting the relief hitting some rocks, throwing the Coast Guardsman into the water. Six shipmates were lost that day, so today was to honor their sacrifice.
