On July 15, 2019, the New York State Police investigated a serious personal injury crash involving a State Police patrol car and a Dodge Caravan with a total of 5 occupants. The crash occurred at approximately 1:08 p.m. on I-90 westbound at mile marker 462.6, in the town of Sheridan, Chautauqua County.  A preliminary investigation revealed 33-year-old Trooper Stephen C. Barker, of SP Buffalo, was responding to a report of a property damage accident.  Trooper Barker was traveling westbound behind a Dodge Caravan being operated by Harry E. Gibbons, 75, of Irving, NY and failed to observe him slowing for traffic ahead and struck the rear of the Dodge. All westbound lanes were blocked and traffic was diverted at exit 58 Silver Creek, to allow 2 helicopters to land and for accident reconstruction to be completed. Trooper Barker was transported to Brooks Memorial Hospital for non-life threatening injuries. Gibbons and passenger Terrance W. Marsha, 70, of Orchard Park, NY, were also transported to Brooks Memorial Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.  David A. Jordan, 72, of East Aurora, NY, who was a passenger in the van, was transported to Mercy Hospital for non-life threatening injuries. Two additional passengers of the van were airlifted from the scene to Erie County Medical Center.  George E. Cole, 66, of Arcade, NY, is currently listed in serious condition.  Timothy W. McCann, 70, of Depew, NY, is in critical condition. All westbound lanes remained closed for approximately 4 ½ hours while Troop A Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) assisted with the investigation causing significant traffic delays late into the evening.

All westbound lanes are now open.  Traffic delays still exist.  Accident is still under investigation at this time.
