Erie County Sheriff Timothy B. Howard reports two Sheriff’s vehicles were struck on Route 198 in Buffalo.
At approximately 10 a.m., a Sheriff’s K9 unit vehicle activated the emergency lights to aid with a broken down vehicle in the westbound lanes of Rte 198 between the Delaware and Elmwood interchanges. Shortly after activating the emergency lights, a westbound vehicle rear-ended the Sheriff’s truck causing significant damage.
The Deputy and his K9 partner were in the vehicle at the time of the collision. The Deputy and the K9 are seeking medical attention from appropriate medical professionals.
While investigating the crash, a Sheriff’s Crash Investigation Unit truck was rear-ended in the eastbound lane of Rte 198. The Explorer was stopped in the left lane with its emergency lights on when a driver struck the truck from behind. The operator of the striking car was evaluated at the scene by Buffalo Fire personnel and paramedics. The Deputy did not sustain any injuries, and he was not in the vehicle at the time of the collision.
Both crashes are under investigation, and there is no update on the condition of the Handler and his K9 partner.
