Town of Cheektowaga Police Chief David J. Zack Named Chief of the City of Asheville, North Carolina.
Town of Cheektowaga Police Department Chief David J. Zack is to retire from the Town of Cheektowaga on February 3, 2020. Chief Zack has 33 years of service with the Town of Cheektowaga Police Department, the last nine as Chief of Police. Chief Zack will begin as Chief of Police for The City of Asheville, North Carolina on February 4, 2020.
Under Chief Zack’s leadership Cheektowaga Police Department:
•Received the National Federation for Just Communities Law Enforcement Leadership Award (2016).
•Received the National Alliance for Mental Illness President’s Award for creating the first Crisis Intervention Teams in Erie County New York (2012).
•Introduced the first Fair and Impartial Policing Training program in New York State (May 2015).
•Introduced the first Procedural Justice Training Program in Western New York (2015).
•Modernized the Department’s outdated Crime Scene Laboratory.
•Researched and implemented Department’s first ever early warning system for use of force.
•Introduced new procedures and investigative guidelines for the Professional Standards Unit.
Throughout his career, Chief Zack was named to numerous local, county and statewide committees and panels:
•Appointed as Administrative Studies Consultant to Law Enforcement Agencies by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (2017-present).
•Appointed to the New York State Municipal Police Training Council by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo (2017-present).
•Appointed to the International Association of Chiefs of Police Task Force on Violence Against Police (2017).
•Appointed to Erie County Central Police Services Board of Trustees (2011-present).
•Appointed to Erie County Central Police Services Training Academy Joint Advisory Committee (2011-present).
•Appointed to Erie Community College Criminal Justice A.A.S. Degree Advisory Council (2011-present).
Chief Zack has also been recognized by his peers:
•Elected President of the Erie County Chiefs of Police Association (2019).
