Erie County Sheriff John C. Garcia issues a statement urging Albany to fulfill its obligation of keeping the public safe following the release of Penny Brown’s murderer.
“From the failed bail reform to a parole system that frees dangerous criminals back into our communities, New York leaders in Albany fail to keep us safe,” stated Sheriff John C. Garcia. “Today’s release of the individual who raped and murdered Penny Brown is evidence that Albany remains disconnected from how citizens feel about violent criminals and people’s concern for their personal safety. Would the parole members arrive at the same decision if this violent criminal took up residence next to their house? Albany must remember its obligation to keep the public safe. Until that occurs, my deputies will not be deterred from performing their sworn duty and arresting those who commit crimes – no matter how quickly bail reform puts them back out on the streets.”
