Missing Boater/BWI, August 5, 3:57 A.M.

The Marine Unit responded to calls about boater in distress. Reports indicated the vessel was overheating and was taking on water near the outer breakwall. One communication indicated the operator was thinking about exiting the sinking vehicle and climbing onto the breakwall. At 5:50 A.M. Deputies Coulombe, Krypel, and Rogers located the vessel operator unresponsive on the northern breakwall nearest to the inlet to the Erie Basin Marina. Deputies climbed onto the breakwall with their medical kit and approached the individual. The male woke up and began moving. The Deputies transported 33-year-old Jason Mesler of Buffalo to shore and following their investigation, Mesler was arrested and charged with BWI. The boat sustained significant damage and had sunk near the outer breakwall.
