Niagara Falls, New York – June 8, 2022
On June 3rd, 2022, 29-year-old Reginald D. Barnes was shot by police officers after stabbing one officer and then going after another one.
The incident started on Friday, June 3, 2022, at approximately 5:22 pm, when officers were responding to a call of a suspicious person on 84th Street.
A neighbor on the block had called police to report Barnes near the house of a person who he was accused of raping back in 2020 and who also had a 10-year order of protection against him.
Barnes who was 28 at the time, was charged with three counts of second-degree burglary, on June 28, Sept. 20, and Oct. 3, 2020, first-degree rape, attempted first-degree rape, and first-degree sexual abuse; one count of criminal mischief; and a count of second-degree assault from injuries suffered by a police officer while arresting Barnes after the Oct. 3 incident.
Barnes pleaded guilty in Niagara County Court to a single charge of first-degree sexual abuse and was sentenced to 10 years probation. He appeared in court on Thursday for a sex offender registration hearing.
According to police, Barnes chased the neighbor who had called police. The neighbor was able to flag down officers who were in the area of 81st and Niagara Falls Blvd.
A short time later, Barnes' victim appeared at the scene and told police about her order of protection. Officers then attempted to take Barnes into custody, but Barnes resisted and began to struggle with officers.
An officer did attempt to use a taser on Barnes, but it was ineffective. Barnes then attacked the officer with a knife prompting officers to discharge their service weapons, and striking him.
Barnes was rushed to Erie County Medical Center, where he remains on life-support in critical but stable condition debunking the false claims and irresponsible reporting by another site.
