Erie County Sheriff Timothy B. Howard reports that an inmate used bedding to hang himself in his cell Friday morning shortly after 1 A.M. on May 25. Michael Girard was discovered by Deputies who performed CPR, deployed an AED, as well as administered Narcan until the Deputies regained a pulse. The individual was transported to an area hospital where he passed away sometime Sunday. During his incarceration, Girard was seen multiple times by mental and medical health professionals with the Department of Mental Health and the Sheriff’s Division of Correctional Health. The Sheriff’s Office has reported the incident to the New York State Commissions on Corrections and the USDOJ within the mandatory reporting time and updated the commission about the individual’s death. The Sheriff’s Office and the two departments are investigating this incident.
