Driver Attempting To Leave Scene Of Crash, Strikes Building.

Erie County Sheriff Timothy B. Howard reports the arrest of 22-year-old Mason Rai of Buffalo after a vehicle crash in Elma.

At approximately 10:08 p.m. on December 22, Deputies responded to a single-vehicle crash at 7070 Seneca Street in Elma. The vehicle had to be winched back onto the roadway. When the car was recovered, the driver attempted to flee the scene in the vehicle, nearly striking the tow truck driver. The car crashed into a structure at 7100 Seneca Street and came to a stop.

Deputies interviewed the operator and found Rai to be intoxicated. A breath test indicated Rai’s BAC level was more than twice the legal limit, and he was arrested.

Rai is charged with aggravated DWI – BAC more than .18%, operating a vehicle with a BAC more than .08%, unsafe backing of a vehicle, and speeding.

The defendant was issued appearance tickets and released to a sober third party.
