Daytime Burglary Thwarted by Deputies and GI Police.
Erie County Sheriff Timothy B. Howard reports Deputies, a Detective, and a Grand Island Police Officer responded to a concerned citizen’s call about a suspicious vehicle with two males along Harvey Road in Grand Island Wednesday afternoon around 1:30. An individual observed the males park their vehicle near the house and walk around the back of a Harvey Road dwelling prompting a to call to police. Shortly after the call, Deputy Was (WAZ) and Grand Island Police Officer Niemann arrived on location and observed signs the dwelling was entered and heard someone in the house. Deputy Ginnane and Detective O’Hara arrived, and one of the subjects attempted to flee. Officer Niemann made contact with the subject outside the dwelling, and the subject tried to flee around the house but was met by Deputy Ginnane near the front of the structure. The subject ran back into the dwelling and securing the door behind him. Deputy Ginnane breached the front door and called for the suspect to surrender, but he attempted to exit the house by leaping from a window and landing face-first into a row of cacti plants. Deputy Was and Detective O’Hara quickly apprehended the suspect and placed Matthew Vaughn, 27 of Niagara Falls, in custody. When Vaughn was captured, he was wearing a black ski mask and knit gloves. Deputies Ginnane and Was along with Officer Niemann began searching the house for the second subject. The subject was located hiding in the basement and surrendered to officers. When taken into custody, Jeremy Cyphers – 23 of Niagara Falls was wearing a dusk mask and knit gloves. Defendant Vaughn is charged with felony counts of burglary and grand larceny, as well as misdemeanor counts of resisting arrest and criminal mischief. Defendant Cyphers is charged with felony counts of burglary and grand larceny and a misdemeanor charge of criminal mischief. A pillow case containing stolen belonging was recovered and taken for processing. The defendants were arraigned in Grand Island Court Wednesday, and Cyphers is being held at the Erie County Holding Center on $25,000.00 cash bail or $50,000.00 bond. Vaughn is held on $75,000.00 cash bail and $100,000.00 bond.
