Cheektowaga - Police Charge Driver With Vehicular Homicide After Monday’s Crash Along Walden Ave.

On February 22, 2021 at approximately 3:47am; there was a serious motor vehicle accident on the Walden Ave at Hoerner Ave in the Town of Cheektowaga.
A 2012 Chevrolet Malibu was westbound on Walden Ave at an extremely high rate of speed when it sideswiped a parked car on the south side of the roadway that was facing eastbound. The Chevrolet Malibu spun out of control and struck and severed a National Grid utility pole located on Walden Ave at Hoerner Ave. The vehicle simultaneously struck a building at 1096 Walden Ave, causing extensive damage to the structure.
After impact with the utility pole and building, a passenger in the vehicle, Leena M. Velez, 17 yo from Buffalo, was ejected from the still moving vehicle. The passenger suffered critical injuries and was transported to ECMC via AMR ambulance. The 17 yo female, would later succumb to her injuries at 1045 hrs. Another passenger in the vehicle, a 30 yo male from Buffalo, suffered minor injuries and was also taken to ECMC where he was treated and released.
The operator of the vehicle, Mkaipa M. Muya, 21 yo from Buffalo, who was uninjured, was initially charged with Driving While Intoxicated and Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated on the day of the incident. On February 25, 2021 the operator of the vehicle was additionally charged with Aggravated Vehicular Homicide and Reckless Driving and is currently being held on bail pending a felony hearing.
