Erie County Sheriff Timothy B. Howard reports the driver of a pickup truck that collided with a North Collins school bus Wednesday was charged and released.

On February 12, at approximately 3:12 p.m., District Deputies and members of the Sheriff’s Crash Investigation Unit (CIU) responded to a crash on Shirley Road at the intersection of Ketchum Road in North Collins.  A vehicle being operated by 37-year-old Joseph Cala of Buffalo ran a stop sign and struck the bus.  The force of the impact forced the bus onto its side.  There were three occupants in the bus, the driver, and aide, and one student, and they were treated for minor injuries and released at the scene.  Cala was also treated at the scene and later released.

Cala is charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, the license was invalid due to an alcohol-related conviction, and three separate vehicle and traffic law violation including failure to stop at a stop sign, failure to yield the right of way, and operation of a motor vehicle by an unlicensed driver.

CIU is still investigating the incident.

The Deputy who serves as the School Resource Officer for North Collins’ school district also responded to the scene.
